About Central Market, ljubljana

Ljubljana's Central Market is more than just a place to shop. Traditionally, it has also been a place for the locals to meet and enjoy themselves together. The Central Market consists of an open-air market, located in the Vodnikov trg and Pogačarnev trg squares, a covered market situated in between the two squares, and a series of small food shops along the river Ljubljanica, which are referred to as 'Plečnik's Covered Market' as they are located in a colonnade designed by Ljubljana's famous architect Jože Plečnik. The entire market has different sections where you get to buy every kind of food or food items you want. Right from fresh foods, fruits and vegetables brought from farmer’s garden to tropical fruits, dry-cured products, flowers and plug plants while meat, cheese, preserves, alcohol and countless other homemade products like freshly baked breads, biscuits, olive oil and pumpkin seed oil can be purchased within.

Must See

Another charm of Ljubljana is the central market. It's pleasant ambience and laid back attitude give a glimpse of the city’s lifestyle and has turned into one of the major sights to visit for travellers. Go first to the vast open-air market (Tržnica na Prostem) just across Triple Bridge to the southeast of Prešernov trg on Vodnikov trg. Here you'll find a daily (except Sunday) farmers market. In the next neighbouring square – Pogačarjev trg – there are always stalls selling everything from foraged wild mushrooms and forest berries to honey and homemade cheeses.

Pogačarjev trg also hosts an organic market on Wednesdays and Sundays, and on Fridays from March to October it's the venue for Odprta Kuhna, a weekly food fair with local and international specialties cooked on-site from restaurants around the city and beyond. The covered market nearby also sells meats and cheeses, and there's a fish market below the Plečnik Colonnade. You'll also find open-air fish stands selling fried calamari.
