With art from the medieval and Gothic periods to neoclassical and contemporary times, the National Gallery of Slovenia (Narodna galerija) is the nation’s leading museum of art. The gallery hosts a permanent art collection from the Middle Ages to the early 20th century. The original of the Baroque Robba fountain can also be seen in the central glass gallery of the building, where it was moved after extensive restoration in 2008. It keeps works of names like Almanach, Gregorio Lazzarini, Valentin Metzinger, Karl Remb, Giulio Quaglio, Franc Kavcic, Jozef Tominc, Jurij Subic, Rihard Jakopic, Ivan Grohar, Ivana Kobilca, Franc Berneker, Stojan Batic, Zoran Music and others. There are guided tours offered, happenings for children, workshops, series of lectures, musical performances and other events. Visitors can pause for coffee and cake overlooking the fountain at the gallery’s pleasant cafe, while there is also a gift shop with a great selection of books and postcards.
The National Gallery hosts the best of art created on the Slovenian territory from early Middle Ages until the first half of the 20th century. It also houses a permanent exhibition of works by Zoran Mušič (1909–2005), one of Europe's leading modernist painters, and various temporary exhibitions. It houses 2 permanent exhibitions where Slovenian artwork and European paintings are put on display. Other than these, it houses temporary art exhibitions as well. The primary aim behind the establishment of this museum was to make people aware of the rich heritage of Ljubljana. The highlighted feature of the museum is the original masterpiece of Francesco Robba, the Three Carniolan Rivers. Apart from the above, the National Gallery houses a room called Gal's Room, where children's and family events are held on a regular basis, an extensive library, a gallery shop with a reading corner, and a cafe.
