About The Royal Yacht Britannia

The Royal Yacht Britannia carried the British royal family across the high seas to different destinations near and far for over 40 years. Since its retirement in 1997, the vessel took up a permanent residency at the historic port of Leith in Edinburgh, where visitors now have the opportunity to explore and find out more about royal life at sea.

The yacht was Her Majesty the Queen's floating palace. Permission to come aboard is granted to visitors all year. Tour the yacht, peruse the photographs and exhibits the yacht to feel what it must have felt like to sail. Pick up a headset at the Visitor Centre for a self-guided audio tour around the vessel. While you are on board, you get to explore the lavish lifestyle of the Admiral's Quarters, the state apartments, the crew’s quarters, and the engine room. The Sun Lounge was reportedly the queen's favourite room to enjoy her afternoon tea.

Be sure to have your own champagne cream tea at the Royal Deck Tea Room where the royal family played games. Nothing like a spot of tea and scone on a royal yacht.
