About St. Giles Cathedral

St. Giles' Cathedral is the official church of Scotland. It is also known as the High Kirk of Edinburgh.St. Giles' is renowned for its crown spire tower, its beautiful stained glass windows, ornate Thistle Chapel, and busy concert calendar.

The church is the principal place of worship for the Catholic faith in Edinburgh and welcomes all its visitors from around the globe. Today the church is famous because of its role in the cultural life of the city and nation and hosting a wide variety of concerts, lectures, exhibitions, and civic ceremonies. The interior of St. Giles' Cathedral is well known for its nearly 200 statues and memorials to distinguished figures from Scottish history, including John Knox, the Protestant leader of the Scottish Reformation.

The main highlights include the exquisitely stained glass windows, the intricate Thistle Chapel, and one of the most impressive organs in Europe, with 4,000 pipes. The church also holds a lot of musical performances throughout the year, with free events that are popular with locals and visitors as well.

  • Even though entry is free, you are encouraged to make a £5 donation
  • You do need to purchase a photo permit for £2if you want to take pictures.
  • It's rather cold inside, so take a coat/cardigan.
  • On-site facilities include restrooms, a café, and a gift shop.
  • Most of St. Giles is wheelchair accessible, with the exception of the Thistle Chapel and the café.
