There's a heartwarming story about Bobby the Skye Terrier, who was looked after by John Gray for the last two years of his life. It is said that Bobby guarded his grave for fourteen years after John Gray's death. With his loyalty, he captured the heart of the Lord Provost, William Chambers (whose own statue stands nearby on Chambers Street) and the rest of the locals who would bring him food and other comforts. His story soon spread across the world, and a Disney film was released in 1961 based on Bobby’s life.
The graveyard is surrounded by the church which is now maintained by a separate trust and is known for a large number of historic monuments. This place is famous for its story of the love and affection a dog had for its master.
