Revolution Square features four parts: A small paved path for visitors to mourn and contemplate, A Wall of Remembrance, having a brass plate of all the victims that led to the arrest and execution of the dictator, The Path of Triumph leading to the main pyramid, and The Memorial of Rebirth, a striking memorial which marks the spectacular events from 1989, when several people were killed for their blatant opposition of the tyrannical rule of the Ceausescu regime. It looks like a white obelisk piercing through a black basket-like crown and stands on an island in Calea Victoriei. Locals term it the black potato on a skewer /stick of the Revolution. An unusual structure commissioned by the Bucharest City Hall in 2004 and part of a broader structure that honors the victims of the Romanian Revolution of 1989 when Communism was overthrown. However, it is the monument's centerpiece, the white marble obelisk surrounded by several statues that is the main attraction. The rounded nest-like structure, the obelisk pierces through represents the martyrs' sacrifices. Nicolai Ceausescu, realizing he no longer was held in high esteem or fear by his people, fled the place only to be caught soon after and executed.
