About Torro De Belem

Torre-De Belem is the highest tower and a historical monument which is in close proximity to the river Tagus. The originally constructed fortress was situated in the center of the river, however, watercourse shifted over the years. The tower depicts the pinnacle of Manueline architecture and its ornate facade embellished with fanciful maritime motifs, that are stone carved like twisted rope, and armillary spheres. The visitors can climb the steep spiral stairs to reach the top of the tower to get a panoramic view of the waterfront esplanade and the river Tagus. The tower's exceptional feature is the beautifully arcaded renaissance loggia. The building is constructed from ivory-white limestone. The prominent facade of the fortress faces the sea which offers a different impression of the tower along the bank of the river. The construction is done in Manueline style architecture, a four-story structure created in the shape of the ship's bow jugging into the water. It is a wonderful tourist destination as kids love playing hide and seek and scampering up and down the narrow spiral staircases. It has various chambers such as the king's chamber, Governor's chamber, an audience chamber, and the chapel, upper battery and the lower battery.
