A trip to Lisbon warrants a definite visit to the insanely popular Torre de Belem or Tower of Belem. The Tower of Belem is the icon of the nation that was historically moulded by the discoveries of the Portuguese maritime navigators. These discoveries of new worlds transformed Lisbon into the main centre of trade in the 15th and 16th centuries. As a whole, the tower takes on the shape of a medieval castle, ready to stand guard over the city against any intruders entering from the sea. King John II wanted to demonstrate his powerful reign by depicting the royal coat of arms, the armillary sphere, and the cross of the Order of Christ over the tower. It is known to be one of the architectural jewels under his reign. The south side of the tower is most highly decorated. On the tower is a beautiful sculptured image of the Virgin with Child. This sculptured image dates back to the 18th Century. No wonder that, in 1983, the tower was included in UNESCO’s list of "Cultural Heritage of Humanity."
The Tower of Belem was constructed between 1514 and 1520 on the northern bank of the Tagus. It served as one of the defense systems of Tagus, during the reign of King Manual I. Originally built on a basalt island close to the bank, it is almost swallowed up now due to gradual changes in the course of the river. Along with the Jerónimos Monastery, this tower represents the most prosperous period of Portugal. You don’t want to miss out on seeing this gem of a tower.
