It is one thing to read about legendary individuals in history books, and a completely different thing to pay your respects at their final resting place. For sure, this experience is surreal and extraordinary. Almost everyone has heard the name of Vasco da Gama, the famous Portuguese explorer. King Manuel I, during his reign, built numerous historic sites in Lisbon, one of them being the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos. Also, known as Hieronymites Monastery or Jerónimos Monastery, this is the final resting place of Vasco da Gama. Based on the designs by the architect Diogo de Boitaca, the building is predominantly in the Manueline style (Portuguese late-Gothic). The construction of this religious building began in 1501, but could only be completed by the 17th Century. The Monastery was built to commemorate the return of Vasco da Gama from India. What is interesting is that the monastery is built on the same site that Vasco da Gama had prayed at before leaving on his journey to India. It was the site of the former Ermida do Restelo chapel.
The monastery has a two-story cloister which is breathtaking. An embellished altar with massive ceilings vaulted and columns. Monastery of Jeronimos is one of the churches adorned with great decor. It overlooks the Church of Santa Maria, which houses the tomb of Vasco da Gama. The tomb of a Portuguese poet and writer, Luís de Camões, is also situated here. One of the halls in the cloister is dedicated to the history of the monastery. Along with the Tower of Belem, the Jerónimos Monastery represents the most prosperous period of Portugal. You don’t want to miss out on it. More so, in 1983, the tower was included in UNESCO’s list of World Heritage sites.
