About Basilica Da Estrela

The white dome of the Basilica de Estrela draws attention across the city Lisbon due to its omnipresence in the city's skyline. The church is of great decor located on the hill west of the city center. The construction was commissioned by Maria I daughter of King Jose I. The construction began in the year 1779 and consummated in the year 1790. The facade which is made of limestone is adorned with a medley of statues and allegorical figures. The interiors of the church are well decorated with various shades of marble and vast spacious space on the inside. While gazing upwards, standing near the high altar the dome resembles an inflated balloon which is illuminated with soft translucent light. The tomb of Maria I is a distinctive feature, where the visitors should look out for the nativity scene crafted in cork and terracotta by Machado de Castro. The leafy Jardim de Estrela is Lisbon's exquisite park and a wonderful picnic spot.
