About Artis

Artis, short for Natura Artis Magistra, originally founded in 1838 is the oldest zoo in Netherlands. There are about 900 animal species and around 250 variety of trees. It also has Amsterdam's oldest monumental tree - the Heimans Oak, dating from 1750. Invisible micro-organisms are made visible here in ARTIS-Micropia, the only museum in the world to do that.

A visit to ARTIS zoo is something that will maintain the interest and enthusiasm of the young and old alike. ARTIS is a beautiful amalgamation of history, nature, and cultural heritage. Only through experience, will you feel the gravity of its history which is almost 2 centuries old! Built-in 1838, ARTIS is the oldest zoo in the country, as well as one of the oldest in mainland Europe.

Located in the center of Amsterdam, you can experience the peace of this zoological garden. Connect with the animals and birds inhabiting the Forest House and Bird House. Allow yourself to travel through space in the mesmerizing ARTIS Planetarium. You can revel in the grace and beauty of ostriches and giraffes in the Savannah. Don’t miss out on going to the world’s only microbe museum, the ARTIS-Micropia. Ensure that you have adequate time to get enchanted with the multitude of colorful butterflies in the Butterfly Pavilion.

The children will specifically enjoy the view of tropical fish and crocodiles in the ARTIS Aquarium. You can refuel and recharge yourselves at the café-restaurant de Plantage, before hitting the collections and exhibitions at the museum. Remember to carry your camera along, as these are precious memories you will want to revisit for years to come.

How to reach

Train

One can take tram number 14 from Amsterdam Centraal train station to the Artis stop, directly in front of the zoo.
The Train lines Sprinter stops near the zoo.
The Light Rail lines 14 and 9 stops near the zoo.
The closest metro station is Waterlooplein,  a 10-minute walk from the main entrance.
 

Bus

Line 22 and 48 pass from here. 

Tips

  • Be prepared for a long walk.
  • Plenty of benches available to sit and relax.
  • There are plenty of special activities for children to enjoy.
  • Take planetarium show.
  • Small trolleys can be hired for children or your bag pack.
  • Do not stray outside the designated paths, corridors, rooms and playing fields.
  • Do not enter animal enclosures or pass the no entry zone of animal enclosures.
  • Do not disturb or feed animals in animal enclosures, tap on windows and animal enclosures and place items in animal enclosures.
  • Do not enter the laboratory in Micropia.
  • All Visitors are required on first request of the ARTIS staff to present a valid admission ticket and ID card.
  • In buildings housing animals please only speak in a quiet and hushed tone and do not run.
  • Buy the map from the visitor center to know about the place in details.
  • Children must be accompanied by an adult.
  • It is strictly forbidden to feed the animals or put hands on any objectable items.
  • The zoo is not responsible for loss or theft. Use of the storage is also at your own risk.
  • There is a gift shop to buy souvenirs from. 
  • Lots of cafes, food outlets, and washrooms are on the premises.
  • Visit early during the day time to escape the rush hours.
  • Book tickets online to avoid long queues.
  • If you are traveling in the summer season, make sure that you cover yourself well, carry an umbrella, hat, water, and sunglasses.
  • Public guided tours are offered.
  • Most of the zoo is wheelchair accessible, and a limited number of wheelchairs are available to borrow.
  • Try to visit late at night on Saturday to enjoy the lively music.
