A dam was built around the river Amstel to prevent the Zuiderzee sea from flooding the city, this attraction was created during the 13th century. Although, no longer home to the Dutch Royal family, this grand 17th-century building is still used to hold official receptions. Dam Square is a town square in Amsterdam, notable for buildings and frequent events. Situated right at the real heart of Amsterdam this huge public square is lined with cafes and shops, and full of vendors selling food and souvenirs. There is a Ferris wheel, which gives a different perspective, as well as plenty of entertainment, which ranges from street performers to annual music festivals.
It is only a five-minute walk down the Damrak from Central Station.
