About Magere Brug

The Magere Brug, also known as Skinny Bridge is a bridge over the river Amstel in Amsterdam which connects the banks of the river at Kerkstraat, between the Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht. The original bridge was built in 1691 and the present bridge was built in 1934. The middle part of the Magere Brug is a bascule bridge made of white-painted wood. It is opened once every 20 minutes by the bridge master to let the river traffic pass through. Use of the bridge is restricted to pedestrians and cyclists since 2003. It is decorated with loads of light which adds to the charm of the place at night. The tour boats used for sightseeing purposes are sufficiently low enough to pass underneath the bridge when closed.
