About Pashupathinath

One of the most sacred Hindu temples of Nepal 'The Pashupatinath Temple' is located on both banks of Bagmati River on the eastern outskirts of Kathmandu. Pashupatinath is the most important temple dedicated to god Shiva. The exact date of Pashupatinath’s construction is unknown.  Pashupatinath Temple is believed to be the oldest Hindu temple of Kathmandu. The earliest evidence of the temple’s existence dates back to 400 A.D. The current temple of Pashupatinath area was built after the original temple was destroyed by termites in the 17 century. There are Countless smaller temples all around the main temple with a story connected with each one.

How to reach

The nearest international airport is located in Kathmandu. Pashupatinath Temple is located just 5 km away from the valley of Kathmandu. You can find a lot of buses and taxis that would take you to Pashupatinath Temple from Kathmandu.

You can find buses from City Bus Station or Ratna Park in Kathmandu. It would take 45 minutes to reach the stop for Pashupatinath Temple, Goshala. From Goshala, you can easily walk to the temple. From Kathmandu, you can find taxis and tempos that would take you directly to Pashupatinath Temple. Any tempo on the way to Bodhnath or Chabahil will run through Pashupatinath Temple. These tempos will drop you off at Ring Road which is located west to Pashupatinath Temple. You can walk to the temple from Ring Road.

Tips

  • Every year between February and March Shivaratri the festival of Lord Shiva is celebrated.
  • If using a taxi service, be careful to arrange for the taxi to wait for you while you are in the Pashupatinath, because taking a local taxi for the return trip will cost you several times more.
  • This temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • Hiring a guide will cost about 10$, it is well worth the money since you really get explanations of the rituals and traditions of Pashupatinath.
  • Non-Hindus are not permitted inside the temple.
  • Photography strictly prohibited.
  • Plenty of Monkeys, they steal food and bags so one needs to be extra careful.
  • Although non-Hindus cannot enter the main shrine, yet the Pashupati temple is so vast with so much more to explore and unveil that its place worth spending some time.
  • With the same entrance ticket, you can visit all the four ghats nearby.
  • Only the four Bhatt or Priests are allowed to the touch the main shiva lingam
