Excellent structure built during the reign of Aurangzeb apart from the Alamgir mosque is the Gyan Vapi Mosque, in Mughal Period 1669 CE after destroying the original Kashi Vishwanath temple of Varanasi. GyanVapi mosque is situated at the norther side of the Dashaswemedh Ghat along the sacred Ganges attached flowing by the side of the mosque. The name of the mosque is inspired by the well known as gyan vapi "the well of knowledge" present within the premises of the mosque. According to the scholars, priests and legends it is said that the lingam is hidden buried within the well. History describes the differences to demolish the mosque to reconstruct the Vishweshwar Temple by the Marathas was unable as the territory was controlled by the Nawabs later Ahilyabai Holkar constructed the present Kashi Vishwanath Temple near to Gyan Vapi mosque.
Close walk easily from the Dasheswamedh temple, 6.1 km from the city center of Varanasi.
