Resembling a Viking ship, the Solfar ("sun voyager") sculpture is made in honor of the Viking voyages. It was the winning entry in the 1986 sculpture competition organized to celebrate Reykjavik's 200th anniversary. The sculptor, Jón Gunnar Árnason, had been a mechanic in his youth who left his professional career to pursue art. He is now considered one of Iceland's most remarkable sculptors.
Many incorrectly believe the Solfar to be a Viking ship. It's not. It is a dreamboat to the sun. The Solfar contains within itself a dream of hope, the promise of undiscovered territory, freedom, and progress. Locals enjoy a stroll by the seaside, admiring the view of the art, the bay, and Mt. Esja. It is the perfect place for photographs!
As the name suggests, this structure is dedicated to the sun. There are beautiful, scenic views all around here, including a full view of the sea.
