This museum was established in 1863 with 15 artifacts. That collection has now grown to 300,000 artifacts and 4 million photographs. The first and second floors cover the Vikings age to the 20th Century.
The Making of Nation is a permanent exhibition. It starts from the settlement age and carries over 2,000 artifacts. Models of Iceland‘s principal turf houses, stone and timber buildings, and different types of wooden churches are present as well. This exhibition also carries interactive elements many visitors enjoy. You can even call a medieval chieftain from 1117! This section also carries interesting DNA research used on the teeth of the first Viking settlers to determine their origins.
Collection of Photographs and Prints is Iceland‘s largest public collection of images. Over four million photographs are stored here, professional and amateur. The museum organizes exhibitions with varying themes relating to its collections and Icelandic photographic history in general and publishes books on photography.
