‘Reykjadalur’ means ‘smoking valley.’ Located on a geothermal river near Reykjavik, the place offers a beautiful hike through a hot spring area to the river. The drive from the city takes you past Iceland’s enchanting landscape to the extinct volcano, Mt. Hengill. A new hot spring area emerged on a hillside above Hveragerdi after a major earthquake shook South Iceland in May 2008. Pillars of steam can be seen rising up from the ground year-round. Several highly active hot springs spew colorful mud and hot geothermal water into the air creating a spectacle. From the parking lot at the trailhead, you’ll have to hike for about 3 kilometers, past hot springs, mud pools, waterfalls, canyons, and gorges. Upon reaching the proper valley, a wide green field with lots of steaming hot spots, aquamarine blue pools, and sulfurous smells will welcome you. As you move upwards, the water gets hotter. A natural clay foot bath can be enjoyed in the park and afterward, you can soak your feet in one of the hot springs. If you visit the place in winter, go up to the last changing point before taking a dip in the steamy water for an amazing and refreshing experience.
The place is almost 50 km away from the city center and takes around an hour to reach by car, which is the only mode of transportation here.
