About Einar Jónsson Museum

The Einar Jonsson museum was built according to a plan by Iceland's first sculptor, Einar Jonsson himself. The house and his works form a unique artistic whole with a very special atmosphere. In  1909, he donated it to the city. The sculptor's ideologies and spiritual influences are evident in all his works and especially so in this one. The native Icelandic heritage and harmonized classical sculpting techniques are visible.

There is a free outdoor bronze sculpture garden that contains some of his works and works by many other artists. The indoor museum which contains five or six galleries of sculptures by Einar Jonsson plus the upstairs apartment that he and his wife lived in requires a nominal entrance fee. This is completely worth it as a visit to his sculptures will make you see the energy, creativity, expressiveness, and uniqueness that made him Iceland's favorite sculptor.

He is well loved and this museum is one of the busiest in Iceland, often crowded on the weekends.
