A marvel in limestone, this mountain towering over the city of Athens is a hot tourist spot. It is a refuge for wolves, from where it gets its name Lycos. For the adventure-hungry, the journey starts at the foot of the mountain and then a trek all the way to the top. Bear in mind the trek is slightly laborious but a mountain train is also available for use. There are several surprises along the way, including the chapel of St. George, an exquisite and serene church tucked inside the mammoth mountain, a great place to rewind and enjoy the view of Athens. A cafe serves lunch and breakfast and for a more upscale dining experience, the Orizontas restaurant provides a beautiful spread. At the top, there are many fun activities to choose from, including an open-air theater. The mountain is the best place to take in Athens in one glimpse, a must go on every tourist's list of places to go.
