About 30 km south of Phnom Penh lies the popular Tonle Bati. It is the collective name for a pair of ancient Angkorian-era temples known as Ta Prohm and Yeay Peau, and the adjacent lake which is a popular picnic destination for the local population. It is also a popular fishing area for both tourists and natives.
The true highlight of course is Ta Prohm of Bati, which is widely considered to be one of the best temples to be seen outside of Angkor. The main temple dates from the late 12thcentury and was constructed during the reign of the illustrious king Jayavarman VII. What makes this temple stand out is that though it is Buddhist, it never saw the fundamentalist Hindu backlash and defacing of carvings that the Buddhist temples at Angkor underwent. The excellent state of repair, detailed carvings and picturesque lakeside setting makes this a must-visit on every traveller’s list.
Combine your visit to Tonle Bati with a trip to the excellent Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre and the spectacular site of Phnom Chisor, which is situated on a mountain top and requires visitors to climb 461 steps to reach the temple!
