The dark-yellow Art Deco Central Markey is a Phnom Penh landmark. Originally, bombed heavily by Thai aircrafts during the Franco-Thai war, the market was damaged and temporarily closed. After the end of World War II, it was rebuilt again in the modern style we see today. Locally also known as Phsa Thmei (New Market), it got its name due to its location and size. Constructed in 1937 by Jean Desbois, the building is shaped in the form of a cross with a massive dome. The four wings branch out into vast hallways with countless stalls.
The market is a shopper’s delight. The aforementioned wings are filled with quaint shops that sell a variety of goods like gold and silver jewellery, antique coins, knock-off watches and other such items. Around the main buildings, there are even more bustling stalls that sell kramas (checked scarves), stationery, household items, cloth for sarongs, flowers, second-hand clothes (usually from Europe). On the structure’s western side, a number of fresh food stalls have sprung up. Undoubtedly one of Phnom Penh’s best markets for browsing, it offers a wide range of products for sale and is extremely clean. It is the ideal place to let loose the shopaholic in you!
