The Rotunda of St. George (Sveti Georgi) is one of the oldest churches of Sofia and an architectural treasure which contains a fascinating collection of well-preserved medieval and religious art. It was first built by the Romans in the 4th century and has marvelous frescoes dating back to the 6th century. The function of the church has transformed since its inception and has served as a baptistery, Christian church, mosque, and a mausoleum. It also holds the remains of Alexander Battenberg, the first prince of modern Bulgaria. As well, many mesmerizing artifacts can be seen throughout the Rotunda.
The Rotunda of St George is situated adjacent to the city center, so you could easily get there by walking for 5 minutes.
