About Mount Vitosha

Vitosha Mountain stands 2,290 meters tall on the outskirts of Sofia, the capital city of Bulgaria. The mountain is the oldest nature park in the Balkan Peninsula and its silhouette is visible throughout the city. It spans across a total area of 27,079 hectares and is home to 61 species of wildlife. Because of its biodiversity, the mountain is the most protected landmark in Bulgaria. It was declared the Bistrishko Branishte Reservation, a biosphere reservation, by UNESCO in 1977.

How to reach

Bus 122 will take you directly to Mount Vitosha. You can also take the blue metro line towards Vitosha station and get off at the last station which is Mount Vitosha. You can also get to Mount Vitosha by taking bus 93 from Vitosha metro station, which runs every day. Also, you can get there by taxi/cab anytime. 

Tips

  • Don’t hike alone, especially during winter.
  • Make sure you carry necessary gadgets like GPS, compass, etc.
  • Avoid avalanche-prone areas.
  • Carry an emergency tool kit.
  • Fires are prohibited beyond the designated fire pits.
  • Camping is prohibited beyond designated areas.
  • Picking flowers or destroying nature is prohibited. 
  • Littering is prohibited.
