About Old Mill

Located in South Perth, Old Mill is one of the city's most popular landmarks. It was built in 1835 and served as a functioning mill until 1859 when it closed down because operations were unprofitable. The site would be repaired into all kinds of things over the years. In 1880, for example, an engineer by the name of "Satan" Browne turned the Old Mill into a hotel called the Alta Gardens. When that ventured also proved unprofitable, the site became a chicken run. Finally, in 1992, the site was registered with the National Trust and restored as a heritage site. It is no longer owned by the National Trust.
