After the giant earthquake in 1861, the authorities built the new Mendoza city around the Plaza Independencia. The park is the home of four small plaza's - San Martin, Chile,
Italia and Espana. These open spaces provide an area for people to enjoy a silent evening and also acts as a space for get-togethers. The initial intention was to build a space for the public to gather in the event of another earthquake, However, Plaza Independencia later became the center for artisans, stage events, festivals and food. With around an area of 1,600 square meters, Plaza Independencia also holds craft fairs and cultural events all throughout the week. It is also the greener part of the city. It is a 24-hour park and there is so much for tourists to enjoy and experience. A relaxed evening with arts and local food is what Plaza Independencia can offer. It is a very quiet neighbourhood and so, Plaza Independencia is the perfect stop for relaxation especially in the evenings. The markets and cafes get active in the evening. There are a playground and a live music stage inside the park. The park is very much active during the night also. It is also a favourite family spot in Mendoza.
Plaza Independencia is right in the center of the Mendoza city. All the major hotels and bus stations are nearby this park. Plaza Independencia is considered to be the city center of Mendoza.
