The Museo Fundacional is a historical museum located on the outskirts of Mendoza city that depict and protect the history and remains of the old city. The original city was destroyed by an earthquake in 1861 and the museum is built around the remains of it. The excavations on the area started in the 1990s and since then, this place has been quite significant in terms of the history of Mendoza. The exhibits and remains include an old slaughterhouse, a fruits and vegetable market, foundations of an old administrative building, and exhibits of pre-Columbian time. It is a quiet museum and worth a visit. One can learn and understand the glory of old city life and how the modern city of Mendoza grew from remains. There is also an aquarium near the museum which is worth a visit. The modern art museum is the newest addition to the museum. A series of dioramas and figures depict the life and culture of Mendoza and most of the artifacts are preserved in chambers. Objects from the colonial times, photographs, sculptures, paintings, old maps, and old weapons also add to the glorious exhibits of the museum.
