The Plaza de Mayo is an iconic public square that holds historical and cultural significance for Argentinians. The plaza has been the site of important mass protests such as the uprising against Spanish rule in 1810, Loyalty Day protests of 1945, and the continuing vigils held since 1977 by Mothers of Plaza de Mayo, a group of women who have been demanding to know the whereabouts of their children who went missing during the junta rule (1976-1983). Apart from public demonstrations, which still occurs frequently, the square, which took its present form in 1884, is now a favorite with tourists and a temporary resting place for office-goers. The plaza is surrounded by many important buildings such as the pink Casa Rosada, from whose balcony Eva Peron addressed huge gatherings of people, the city council, Cabildo, the Metropolitan Cathedral, and important avenues.
