Announced as the most beautiful book shop in the world the 'El Ateneo Grand Splendid' is undoubtedly aptly justified for the title. One can state that there are bookstores and then there is El Ateneo Grand Splendid, the crowned jewel in the list of bookstores. Named as the second-best bookstore in the world by the UK's Guardian newspaper, the El Ateneo - with its gorgeous interiors, theatre boxes and frescoes - is an unlikely venue to house books, and to an extent it is true. The grand building, which opened in 1919, was designed to host performing arts. In 1929, it transformed into a movie theatre and was the first to show a talkie in Buenos Aires. In 2000, the building faced an uncertain future due to an economic crisis. But, thankfully, it was turned into a bookstore. And what a splendid decision it was! Today, the luxurious bookstore is a BA landmark and a popular tourist attraction.
