About Slovak National Gallery

The Slovak National Gallery exhibits both modern and classical art including Gothic and Baroque sculpture and painting. Located along the banks of Danube river, the building is housed in a national cultural monument, Eszterhazy palace, that belonged to a significant magnate family. There are a bus stop and tram line right in front of it and easily reachable. It is very close to the Hviezdoslav’s square and the UFO bridge. So you can club these tours together. The top floors of the gallery have temporary exhibitions and the bottom one has permanent displays. The gallery’s website gives information on which temporary exhibitions are displayed at the time of your visit. If you have a flair for art, you will love the Slovak National Gallery for sure.

Must See

  • Different exhibitions of modern and classical art including Gothic and Baroque sculptures and paintings.

  • There is a 'black room' with a few paintings – with detail on specific parts that are highlighted in dim light.
  • Statues in the 'Body and gestures' room.
  • 'Life and death' room is filled with archaic works illustrating how people visualized death back then.

How to reach

Take the tram number 4 to Námestie Ľudovíta Štúra from the city center. Get off and walk towards Rázusovo nábrežie for one minute and you will reach the gallery. There is a tram every 8 minutes.

It is 5.8 km from the city center and can be reached by taxi as well. The fare will be around 4 EUR.

If you are coming via tram, buy a public transport ticket for 60 minutes that costs EUR 1.20; this ticket is good for almost all journeys within Bratislava. You can also travel with a ticket for 15 minutes for EUR 0.70 or a ticket for 30 minutes for EUR 0.90. For pets, bicycles or large luggage, you need to purchase a ticket for .35 cents and this is valid for 180 minutes.
