About Bratislava Castle

Built in the 9th Century, the beautiful Bratislava Castle stands on an important crossroads of ancient history. It is Bratislava's major landmark overlooking the Capital, the age-long symbol of the city. It proudly stands on the hill above the Danube river offering breathtaking views of the city and its surroundings. The castle has been reconstructed and renovated throughout the years, especially after the massive fire in 1811 and WWII. Bratislava Castle has four wings, each with a magnificent corner tower. The south-west tower (jewel's tower) housed the Hungarian coronation jewels for two centuries. The area in front of the castle called "Yard of Honor" is bordered by two triumphal gates and guard houses of the imperial guards. The Slovak National Museums is located in the castle and is open to the public, with an entrance fee. On the eastern terrace of the castle, you can see reconstructed remains of the Great-Moravian basilica and other ancient buildings. The castle is beautifully lit during the night and is a sight to behold. Nowadays, the castle hosts many expositions and is an ideal place for long walks, with beautiful surroundings and scenery to explore. It serves as a representative venue for the Slovak Parliament as well.

Must See

  • Exhibitions of the Slovak National Museums are open to the public at Bratislava Castle. It is located inside the Castle and offers different exhibitions; paintings, arts, sculpting, and beautiful handicrafts.

  • The Crown Tower is a must see, on the southwest corner and has an observatory with a beautiful view of the whole Bratislava, Danube, and Austria.

How to reach

Bratislava Castle is only 400 meters from the city center and can be reached on foot. Head south on Zámocká toward Palisády and take a left at Námestie Alexandra Dubčeka. Walk for 35 meters and you will reach the castle. You can also walk from the beautiful St. Martin's Dome, under the New Bridge to the other side of the busy road and up the stairs to the castle's gate.

Get on the trolley bus number 203 or 207 (in front of the Grassalkovich Palace) and get off at the Zámocká stop. You will find yourself directly in front of the Castle. You can travel with the ticket for 15 minutes for EUR 0.70 or a ticket for 30 minutes for EUR 0.90. For pets, bicycles or large luggage, you need to purchase a ticket for .35 cents and this is valid for 180 minutes.
