Set in the heart of the city's West End, Glasgow Botanic is a delightful hybrid of a public park and a botanic garden, which was adorned by a great conservatory: the Kibble Palace of 1873. Established in 1817 to supply resources to the University of Glasgow, this garden is spread out in a mind-blogging 50 acres with an internationally-acclaimed, architecturally impressive glasshouses, and extensive temperate and tropical plant collections. It was bestowed with a Green Flag Award in 2011. A great vista of Victorian architecture, this amazing garden takes you through the doors of history and transports you into the splendor of the Victorian glasshouse with exotic plants and a lovely wee cafe which is nestled in its heart. You'll see Billy Connelly's Big Banana boots, Rab C Nesbitt's string vest, and Mary Doll's leopard -atterned coat. A little jewel, much prized by Glaswegians, it houses the famed Kibble Palace which is an A-listed Victorian curvilinear iron glasshouse with temperate plants from around the world. The main glasshouse is even more interesting with its zoned areas of desert, temperate and rainforest areas, interesting conservatory, orchids, and a large range of tropical and subtropical plants. The arboretum and grounds with trees from around the world, the rare collection of Australasian tree ferns, World Rose Garden, Herb Garden, Herbaceous Borders, Vegetable Garden, Potager, and the Chronological Border can easily be a botanist's delight.
There is an amazing collection of classical marble statues and a wonderful display of lights to leave you in awe. There's the Children's Play Area and the Children's Garden for the young. There is something for everyone. The Hopkirk Building for special events and workshops makes sure you come back again and again! Entertaining squirrels, peaceful walkways and exotic glasshouses make this a delightful place to step away from life’s hustle and bustle. It serves as a balm for the soul.
