Moroccan Jewish Museum is often referred to as the ‘Hidden Gem’, with no latest technology, no whistles or bells but still worth a visit if the love for cultural and historical facts prevails in you. This museum would evoke wonder in you as it is the only Jewish museum in an Islamic world. This one-of-a-kind museum depicts how this land is tolerant of all faiths. The Moroccan Jewish museum displays the rich history and the way of everyday life of Judaism. It has a model of Jeweller’s shop inside which showcases the traditional silver jewelry making skills of the Jewish community.
Moroccan Jewish Museum was established in 1997 to rally the lives of the largest Jewish population in a Muslim country. This place is divine for those who love a taste of history with an opportunity to explore various artifacts like the replicas of typical Jewish synagogues, circumcision chairs, Torah Ornaments and covers, and many more.
This building has 1 large multipurpose room and 3 pavilions that present more than 1500 artifacts that include religious items like Jewish prayer books and traditional costumes. There is a library inside which has a huge collection of photographs, documents, videos. Though the museum opened in 1997, the building existed before that. It was built in 1948 by Célia Bengio and was run as an orphanage for Jewish young orphans in Casablanca. It’s earlier name was “Home d’Enfants Murdock Bengio”. It closed down in the 1990s and emerged back as the museum after extensive renovations were done. It is the first and to date the only museum dedicated to preserving Jewish heritage and history in North Africa and the Middle East.
