Mode & Cost of Transports

There are various bus companies that offer bus services in Nairobi. Though the fares are cheap, the traffic within the city makes this a slower option.

Matatus or Mini Taxis: The network of matatus is somewhat informal and travel all over the city. Due to the unruly behaviour of drivers and safety concerns, such vehicles must be avoided and are not recommended to foreign tourists. Fares start at around KSh 40 and may reach upwards of KSh 150 for longer routes.

  1. Railways: Trains that operate from within the city to the suburbs and are a reliable means of travel for commuters. They are comparatively cheaper in the city, ranging from one way journey tickets costing 20 KSh to 100 KSh for return journey tickets.
  2. Tuk Tuk:These are iconic 3 wheeled motorbike-taxi hybrids, well known for their characteristic sound while riding. Compared to taxis, their fares are cheaper more negotiable.
  3. Private taxis: Most Kenyan taxis operate without properly functioning meters. These are invariably negotiable and start around KSh 350 to KSh 600 for short journeys, making it one of the more expensive choices within the city.
