About Tsavo National Park

The Tsavo National Park is one of Kenya's most rewarding park. It is located in the coastal province of Kenya in between Nairobi City and Mombasa. It has plenty of wildlife along with exquisite scenery with a variety of landscapes that add to the beauty of this place. From extinct volcanoes to rocky mountain peaks, coarse outcrops to warm springs and the large landscapes with sparse greenery that will make you wonder, how life exists here?
It is divided into Tsavo East and West and together they are one of the largest parks of Kenya, covering 4% total land area. The Tsavo East park flows more with dry plains across which the Galana River flows. It also includes the Yatta Plateau and Lugard Falls. Whereas Tsavo West National Park is more mountainous and wetter than the East park, with swamps, Lake Jipe and the Mzima Springs. It is known for birdlife and for its large mammal’s e.g. black rhino, Cape buffalo. The parks can be accessed through several gates. Tsavo East can be entered through Manyani Gate, Voi Gate, Buchuma Gate and Sala Gate. Tsavo West can be entered through Mtito Gate, Man-Eaters Gate, Chyulu Gate and one other near Maktau.
There are various camps located across the park that has a good arrangement for stays. They are the Finch Hatton’s camp, Satao Camp, Severin safari camp, Kilaguni Serena Lodge. All the tents are well equipped with African beds and table and chairs, hence giving a good African stay experience. Around the camps, you will also get shops selling local African goods made by the local tribes. You can shop souvenirs from there and remember the stay in the wonderful park. To experience the wilderness and the rawness of the jungle yourself, this national park is a must-visit spot.

How to reach

You can drive from Nairobi or Mombasa it will take around 4 hours to reach via bus or taxi. Moreover, there are multiple gates to get in the park. It is at a distance of 240 km from Nairobi, 250km from Mombasa to reach Mtito Andei Gates.
Drive from Voi to Tsavo National Park in  1hour and 30 minutes covering a distnce of 76.6 km.

Tips

  • Carry your hats and sunscreen with you
  • Keep wet wipes handy as the environment is dusty in parks
  • Pack a pair of binoculars to enjoy animals at a distance
  • A waterproof bag will be your saviour if it rains
  • A mosquito repellent cream is a must
  • Do follow the signposting it leads the visitor from one natural wonder to another
