About Baiterek Tower

Bayterek is an idyllic 97-meter high monument in the heart of Astana city. It is meant to stand for a Kazakh folk tale about a mythical tree of life and a magic bird of happiness, named Samruk, which is believed to have laid its egg between the branches of this mythic tree which symbolizes the sun and hope. From the observation deck, one can get to see the 360-degree panoramic view of the surrounding city. This magnificent monument was opened in 2002, a lattice steel structure resembling a flower on top of which a large golden ball stands. There is a lift that takes the visitor up inside the golden ball. The main charm inside the monument is the gilded handprint of the president of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Abishuly Nazarbayev which is on the top floor inside the golden ball. Those who visit here, place their hand upon the imprint of Nazarbayev’s and make a wish. There is also one small cafe inside and an art gallery. Some of the local citizens jokingly call it ' Chupa cups' because of its similarity to the popular lollipop.

There is a legend in Kazakhstan about a mythical bird who lays a golden egg in the top branches of a tall poplar tree. In the egg are human desires and happiness, but it is out of human reach. The Baiterek Tower in Nur-Sultan (formerly Astana) embodies this symbolic story. The base of the tower appears as a tree made out of lattice, with a golden glass globe nestled in its top “branches”.

The tower is more than a symbol of this folktale. It is a symbol for all of Kazakhstan. The tower is 97 m tall, representing 1997 when the city became the capital of the country. Visitors can take the elevators to the observation deck within the glass ball and take in spectacular views of this old city. Place your hand in the handprint embossed by the President of Kazakhstan.

Kazakhstan is proud of this symbol of happiness and new beginnings. May you attain yours!
