The Charyn National Park that runs along the Charyn River includes the Charyn Canyon. The park covers roughly 309,000 acres of land from Enbekshikazakh to Almaty. Much like the Grand Canyon Park, it was created to protect the geological and ecological systems along the river and desert.
The Valley of the Castles is perhaps the best-known attraction in the park. These red sandstone formations in a side of the canyon look like tall castle walls. In addition to the canyon and all of its wonders, Charyn National Park has guest houses and a trail to the ash groves. What visitors may not expect are the cemeteries and burial mounds spread out across archaeological sites. Gazebos and yurts throughout the park provide food and shelter.
Stay for a day and explore the periphery on your own, or book a tour into the heart of the park and stay for a few nights. Either way, you’ll want to see everything Charyn National Park has to offer.
