The Alzhir Museum-Memorial Complex does not have a happy history. The Alzhirc in Akmol was once a notorious prisoner of war camp for the wives and children of men seen as traitors to their country. Women of all backgrounds, from seamstresses to doctors were imprisoned during the Stalin years.
Family and descendants of the women have donated personal items to the museum. Each of the objects helps to tell the story of its previous owner. Photographs, clothing, ceramics, jewelry, and a bottle of Chanel No.5 perfume are on display in the museum. Among the most heart-wrenching artifacts are the letters from children to their mothers.
Visitors are encouraged to learn about the Kazakh camp system, and stop by the guard post and transportation wagon. The mass grave of the women who died at Alzhir is located on the edge of the town.
