About Trinity College Library( Old Library and Book of Kells)

Libraries are not usually thought of as something to see when on vacation. The Library of Trinity College Dublin definitely is.

The library is part of the College and the University of Dublin and is the only copyright library in the United Kingdom. Don’t miss the Long Room, built in the 16th century. There are more than 200,000 books and one of the last copies of the original 1916 Proclamation of the Irish Republic.

Among its treasures are the Brian Boru harp and the Book of Kells. Bound into four volumes this illuminated Latin manuscript is believed to date back to the 7th century. It contains the Gospels of the New Testament in master calligraphy, insular art, animals, patterns, and Celtic knots in the most vibrant colors on vellum paper. There are 680 pages of elaborate art and text created by at least three different monastic scribes.

Named after its original home the Abbey of Kells, it is a true Irish treasure which must be visited when at the Library of Trinity College.
