Established in 1976, Mellat Park is the oldest and one of the vastest urban parks in Tehran. The park seems to be spread over an area of 34,000 hectares and comprises 120 different species of shrubs and trees that add to the beauty of the park. One of the essential and attractive elements of this park is its mesmerizing entrance that proudly adorns a carpet of vibrant, colorful flowers, eloquent sculptures, alluring water fountains, and tall trees. The park also is home to one of the first musical fountains in Tehran. Various other facilities also are present in the park for the entertainment of its visitors, such as playgrounds, restaurants, cafes, and also a movie complex.
Mellat Park is also home to the Mellat Cineplex and gallery, which is spread over an area of 6,000 hectares, the chief architects of which are Catherine Spirirndonoff and Reza Daneshmir. The Mellat complex features a cinematheque and a space for exhibitions. To ensure that its visitors have excellent recreation time, the park features various sports facilities such as badminton court, volleyball court, chess table, table tennis table, and trekking routes. The first locomotive of Tehran, which is still displayed on its rail, is one of the major attractions in the park. Mellat Park adorns the sculptures of some of the greatest Persian celebrities such as Saadi Shirazi, Nima Yooshji, Ferdowsi, and Mohammed-Hossein Shahriar. The west part of the park features a zoo displaying varied species of animals and birds such as peacock, finches, monkey, ostrich, budgerigar, and parrot.
