The ruins of the Konark Sun Temple are located about 22 miles from Puri. The temple dates back to the 13th century. In the traditional Kalinga style, the main entrance faces east so it is the first to see the sunrise.
The Sun Temple was originally dedicated to Surya, the Hindu sun god. A stone sculpture of a chariot with wheels and horses once stood there. What remains of the temple and its structures are famous for their iconography and elaborate artwork. Large carvings of elephants, lions, and horses are joined by relics of kings and daily life. It is perhaps best known for its erotic kama- and mithuna-themed scenes.
Tourists who visit the temple today see one partially restored by conservation efforts.
