Take one of the seven gates into the Mehrangarh Fort, or Mehran Fort, in Jodhpur. It is one of the largest forts in India, built-in 1459.
A winding road leads up to the fort, which sits on a hill above the city. The tall walls still show marks of the cannonballs fired during the invasion. Inside the fort are palaces with delicate carvings and large courtyards.
Also inside the fort is the museum where you will find an extensive collection of arms, costumes, and paintings. Don’t miss the elephant howdahs, extravagantly embellished wooden seats made for kings. The ladies rode on palanquins, a collection of which is also on display at the museum. The armoury exhibit has a collection of weapons and swords, including the sword of Akbar the Great. As with many cultures they also had traditional clothing, the museum has preserved the different types of turbans and clothing common during dynasties and showcased them beautifully in exhibits. Take in one of the most important collections of art from the Mughal period and the remains of Emperor Akbar.
