For a journey back in time, visit the Jaisalmer Fort, the Sonar Quila or Golden Fort. It is quite possibly the only fort in the world heavily populated with half the city’s population still living within its walls. The fort almost seems to disappear into the Thar Desert sands with its yellow sandstone walls. You can see it on the hill from miles away.
Its beauty is surpassed only by its architecture. The fort has 99 bastions, fortified gates, a cannon and 2.5 miles of inner walls. Go on a self-guided tour to see the Raj Mahal Palace. Stop at one of the seven Jain temples, some dating back to the 12th century, the Ashtapadh Temple, or the Laxminath Temple dedicated to Lakshmi and Vishnu. The Sambhavanatha Temple has more than 600 artefacts and scriptures.
Visit the Havelis, merchant houses that were converted to museums. Some going back to the 15th century still have families living in them. You might be exhausted, so a bite to eat at one of the Italian, French, and native Indian restaurants would be in order.
Experience life in a living fort today.
