The Ellora “Caves” aren’t caves at all. It is an archaeological wonder in Maharashtra, built in the 6th and 9th centuries. There are 34 structures excavated out of the rock face of the Charanandri Hills.
Visit the most famous single monolithic rock-cut temple in the world, the Great Kailasa. Instead of being carved from the bottom up, excavators started at the top and worked their way downward. Construction started because the queen vowed to build a temple to cure her husband the king of the disease he was suffering from. She vowed to fast until she could see the top of the temple, so it was carved within a week.
One of the most famous Buddhist caves is the “Carpenter’s Cave”. It is a massive rock hall with ceilings carved to look like a cathedral’s wooden beams. In the middle stands a 15-foot statue of Buddha.
The caves are all dedicated to Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain religions. Although these are not a place of modern worship, they are a marvel to explore!
