About Golden Temple

There are very few places on earth where you can see a building built in marble and copper overlapped with gold foil. The place exuberates religious sentiments with extreme faith in abundance. As a shining example, travel to the Harmandar Sahib, the Abode of God, Exalted Holy Court, or Golden Temple in Amritsar, Punjab. Though destroyed by the Muslim armies from Afghanistan and the Mughal Empire, it has been rebuilt countless times to become the most important shrine in the Sikh religion.

The Golden Temple is a Gurdwara, a place of worship no matter what faith you practice. It was built on a man-made pool. Take the main gate by the clock tower to get to the Sikh Museum for a glance at art covering the gurus and martyrs, and weapons including swords and kartars. From any of the four entrances, you’ll find the Holy Pool of Immortal Nectar that surrounds the inner sanctum. Around the pool pay homage to the Baba Deep Singh Shrine, visit the Ath-Sath Tirath (68 holy places), and stare in wonder at the ber trees. The ber trees are said to cure even leprosy after bathing in the pool. The Langar community-run kitchen serves a simple and free vegetarian meal to all visitors.

The Golden Temple is open to men and women, from all walks of life. Find serenity here.
