Who doesn’t dream of living in a castle? Schloss Neuschwanstein is nestled in Bavaria, the southernmost area of Germany. In fact, Schloss Neuschwanstein was the inspiration for Disney’s Sleeping Beauty castle. Unfinished at the time of his death, King Ludwig spent fewer than 200 days in residence before he died in 1886. Since then it has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe. More than 1.3 million visitors come each year, with as many as 6,000 on any given day in high season. Inside you’ll see the extravagance of the quirky King Ludwig. In Ludwig’s royal bedchamber you’ll see a huge Gothic carved bed on a mosaic floor of more than 2 million individual stones. Don’t miss the Sangersaal (Minstrels’ Hall) with frescos showing scenes from the Tannhauser opera. Plan ahead if you intend to visit, and save yourself several hours of waiting time. Tickets are available at the ticket center in the village of Hohenschwangau, close to the castle.
