The Musee d’Orsay is one of the largest museums in the world. It is located in Paris in an old Beaux-arts railway station built between 1898and 1900 for the 1900 Universelle Expo. Initially, it was a train station until 1939. Later, during WWII, it became the postal depot for POWs. Continuing with its journey, it was temporarily home to Drouot, Paris’ oldest auction house.
While the Louvre houses art and sculpture from all the eras, the Musee d’ Orsay is a museum in Paris, consisting of French art dating from1848 to 1914, furniture, and photography. The d’Orsay is where you’ll find the largest collection of Impressionist and Post- Impressionist masterpieces in the world, by painters including Monet, Degas, Manet, Renoir, Cezanne, Seurat, Sisley, Gauguin, and Van Gogh.
Imagine the scandal and the stir that would have been caused in the art world by the ‘Olympia’ by Manet. This is the painting of a naked prostitute who seems rather unperturbed that millions of people stare at her every day, all throughout the year. While ‘Starry Night’ by Vincent Van Gogh is in New York, its counterpart, ‘Starry Night over the Rhone’, is here. And there is absolutely no need to wander in the garden outside when one can be transported by Claude Monet’s ‘Blue Water Lilies’. Explore on your own, or take a private tour to unearth the treasures of the Musee d’ Orsay. Whether you are inclined towards art or otherwise, head to the museum to have a wonderfully enriching journey into the past through the collections in the museum.
