"Calling all danger seekers! Virunga National Park was created in 1925 and was one of the first protected areas in Africa. This park is home to an extinct volcano, a dormant volcano, and two active volcanoes.
The two active volcanoes in the park, Mount Nyamuragira and Mount Nyiragongo, are responsible for 40% of Africa’s volcanic eruptions. The most recent eruption was in January of 1977, where the lava flowed at a rate of over 100km/hour. The eruptions from these volcanoes are fairly predictable, making them safer for visitors. Trekking to the top of Nyiragongo, visitors can peer down into the largest lava lake in the world.
In Virunga National Park, there are an incredible amount of different habitats ranging from swamps to savannahs. With diversity in habitats brings a variety in animals, so visitors have the chance of seeing hippopotamuses, gorillas, monkeys, chimpanzees, and many, many others.
If standing above a large lake of churning lava sounds exciting, book a trip to Africa’s Virunga National Park to climb Mount Nyiragongo. "
