About Santiago Metropolitan Cathedral

Santiago Metropolitan Cathedral is a mix of architectural styles that exhibits religious art is luxuriously decorated as evidenced in Cathedral-de Santiago. Although the building of the Cathedral was devastated by the earthquake, it was completed by the Italian architect Joaquin Toesca. The Cathedral has dazzling glided arches with sparkling chandeliers and religious artwork. The Cathedral exhibits Neoclassical architecture featured with columns and embellished bell towers. The main doors are furnished with Jesuit carvings. The museum of sacred art which is located at the Santiago Metropolitan is a place to visit that displays religious frescoes, imagery, sculptures, and furniture.

How to reach

Santiago Metropolitan Cathedral is  2.9 Km away via Avenue Manuel Rodriguez Nte, Avenue Manuel Rodríguez and Gral Mackenna. The visitors can take a bus from this point to reach the place. Walk 700 meter till you reach PA 15-Parada to catch the bus number - 507 or PA 7- Parada 1 and walk 77 meters to reach Quinta Normal. Take the L5 bus via Vincenta Valdes to reach Plaza de- Armas. After that, walk 130 meters to reach Cathedral Metropolitana. It will cost approx 1000 CLP by bus each way.

Tips

  • Almost all Cathedrals are designed for the visitors to look up to the heavens and this Cathedral is no exception. With the Baroque decoration, and ornate frescoes on the ceiling, chandeliers and gilded columns, the ceilings are really worth looking up to.
  •  The flooring is also worth a mention made up of black and white geometric patterns made up of thousands of small tiles.
  • In contrast, the crypt is totally stark which seems quite fitting in the austere sense.
  • Wear comfortable and respectful clothes.
  • Maintain discipline inside the church.
  • Refrain from damaging the carvings inside the church.
  • Talk softly as it may disturb people who are praying.
  • Do not move around haphazardly as it may annoy others.
