The Museo de la Memoria y Los Derechos Humanos is a memorial dedicated to the victims of Human rights violations held during the civil-military regime from 1973 to 1990. This Chilean Museum, located in Santiago, was inaugurated by former president Michelle Bachelet on January 11th, 2010. Michelle Bachelet, who laid the first stone for the Museum, was one of the victims herself during the dictatorship of Pinochet. The Casa de la Memoria organization provided material and documentation that was put together to form the collection of the Museum. The Museum added an interpretation of Chile's indigenous peoples mainly based around photography in 2011.
The Museum is a bicentennial project to promote an educational initiative that enhances consideration and knowledge. It is also an on-going effort to develop the cultural circuit of Santiago's West Side through various objects, documents, sound presentation, and innovative side. The Museum of Memory and Human Rights is a three-story building with 11 rooms where each room is labeled with a specific name. The rooms are beautifully classified with testimonies, letters, and other objects. Room 1, which lies in the entry hall, exhibits "Human rights and universal challenges."
Moving towards the first floor brings you close to five other rooms serial from 2nd to the 6th presenting information and objects about "End of the rule of law," "International Condemnation, "artifacts and documents of torture and repression, a microcinema about "Military cop of September 11th, 1973”, and the pain of the children during that time. The second level of the museum building constitutes another five rooms, with each displaying and disclosing the demand for truth and justice, absence and memory, fight for freedom, return to hope, and "Never again." In a few of these rooms, one can also find candles lighted in the victims' memory during the civic-military regime.
